About Kibera

     Home to over 250,000 people, Kibera, located in Nairobi, Kenya, is one of the largest slums in Africa. Kibera residents live in extreme poverty, earning less than $1 USD a day. In Kibera, homes are congested, children cannot attend school, water is scarce, and families cannot afford food. The community also suffers from high crime rates and drug addictions.

      Despite all of these challenges, Kibera’s rich culture and history manifest in its tightly knit community. The Swahili term “Harambe” represents the coming together of a community to achieve a common goal, which the Kibera community heavily embodies. Families often share cooking supplies and support each other through losses and tragedies. Through the struggles, as Eunice puts it, “there is always hope for tomorrow”.
